As I was leaving work the other day, I was stopped at the corner and noticed a sign on the curb. It said “Affordable Websites $399!” and as I pondered the possibilities I tried to imagine a few things – 1) how do you actually build a quality website for that? 2) who actually buys a website for $399? and 3) what should you expect for $399?
We’ve been building and designing websites now for about 10 years and I can tell you that to build and design a quality website it takes more than a few hours. Even if you go on GoDaddy and use their set-up you’ll spend more than a few hours trying to set one up. So for the life of me I just can’t imagine what you get for $399? To really create one from the ground up that includes custom design, copy, pictures, and programming you’re looking at starting around $3500 up to $10,000 plus depending on the amount of pages and programming needed.
Am I going to get a custom design or a revamped template? Am I getting the branding support I need to fully communicate my brand and our unique selling points? Is my site going to have the optimization I need to be found on the search engines? Am I going to get the support I need down the road? Is it going to optimized for social media? Is it going to have a built in Content Management System? Will my site be pretty but not functional? Will it reflect my company’s brand and other support materials? Will it have rich content? Will I need to supply all the copy and pictures? Will it work across all platforms? Will it look professional? Is it being programmed locally or by Mr. Wang over in China?
I understand that we’ve all had to cut back on things and find better and more efficient ways to do things(and yes, that’s code for “cheaper”). But in times like this maybe the question you need to ask is “can I afford to take a chance on a $399 website?”. Can you afford to take a chance with your brand and instead of getting ahead of the curve you actually fall behind it? Can you afford to waste $399 and more importantly the time and extra money it will take to correct your new “affordable website”?
My advice is do some research and find a company with experience and a proven track record. Ask for examples, case studies, and references. There are a lot of “experts” in the interactive and social media market today that claim to know what they’re doing so be careful. Be sure to check out their own website and see how it looks. Be sure that the “experts” website isn’t a template either. If they claim to be “social media experts” be sure they’re doing it themselves on twitter and facebook. And don’t let them speak over your head in tech-talk, ask questions and ask them to talk to you in terms you understand. Just because they use big words doesn’t mean they actually know how to make them work for you.
In today’s market, we’re all looking for bargains. But can you really afford to take that kinda chance on your business and the brand you’ve worked so hard to build? How can you afford not to invest the capital needed to do it right and by a proven company that knows how?
There are “schisters” out there trying to sell you snake oil. Remember the old saying “you get what you pay for”…well, it’s true.
You’ve some honest ideas here. I done an investigation about the issue and discovered most peoples will trust your site.
I have not checked in here for some time since I thought it had gotten kinda boring, but the last few posts have been very impressive so I suppose I will factor you back in to my regular bloglist.

The way I see it with the ever changing news its hard to keep up to date on current facts. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

You can only sync your iPod with one library at a time. The only way to get all three games on your iPod would be to have them all loaded into the same iTunes library. I’m not sure how many computers you can authorize games on, I suspect it is probably only one. So you’d either need to save the file containing phase and remove it from your computer. Then add it to your friend’s computer and authorize it there or vice versa. Keep in mind though, that for music you can only sync to one library as well and it has to be the same library as the one you use to sync your games.
